Riola

I am a technologist and a software developer for longer than I care to remember.

I am interested in digital sovereignty and privacy.

I dislike big tech. I don't use google or any other companies that destroy the open internet. I use and regularly support Graphene OS, Qubes OS, Mullvad VPN and other privacy respecting and open technologies.

I have one goal: to enable creative people to build and own their community and to be able to monetize their own creativity.

Davinci Space: Freedom and Privacy

I gave it a lot of thought over the weekend, and we spent a few hours with @Sara thinking about how we can express more clearly what Davinci Space is. I want Davinci Space to be the start of the journey to anyone, to all of us on the journey towards digital freedom. We are bringing together a research group, a set of courses on how to free yourself from the surveillance economy, and a toolbox that helps you to keep and achieve your digital sovereignty.

This Week: Onboarding and Organizing

System Posts

This week I want to focus on onboarding and organizing knowledge. Last week we deployed personal feed and system posts. This enables us to start giving welcome posts and tutorials to new users. So now you can get a welcome post when you join the community, explaining the lay of the land to you.

Also, when you become a community creator, a system post triggered by the membership upgrade can walk you through how to create your own community.

Street Art Quest Is Back

The street art quest is back, because it got expired before I could upload my best photos. I extended the rules a bit, any photo that is interesting, taken by you outside or at a public place counts. Up to 5 per user.

This is also to test and demo the quest framework of Davinci Place.

After you submit your first quest solution, you will get the community challenge badge and the points on your membership card.

Davinci Space Temporary FAQ

I expect soon we will create a proper FAQ page. For now, let's start with some question that were asked by a kind stranger:

1. Who Are You Sponsored By?

Personalized Feed and new communities

Hello @CyberVitexus, welcome. Please let me know if I can help.

I expect two things to go live today. Personalized feed was a beast, and took a full day of planning and re-planning.

Personalized feed

you can exclude topics from your feed.
you can exclude authors from your feed. This is not a block, that comes later. You can still see their comments, you can follow them, but you don't need to read their posts :)

My Smart Watch

My watch does not have a radio. It does not collect and share information about me. I think that's smart.

But more seriously, there is something about this watch that makes is smarter than your average Casio. Can you tell me what? If you figure it out, post it in the comments. Team members can't play :)

The Community Creator Tier

We've added a new membership tier, called the "Community Creator". It has all the permissions of a standard user, plus the ability to create a new, independent, sovereign community. Currently this tier is priced at 9 EUROs (about 10 USD) per month. Since we don't have ad revenue, and we don't collect and sell your data, this 9 EUR will have to cover for all costs of running and developing davinci space. This works for now, but prices (especially for new communities) are subject to change. A new,

Next Steps For Davinci Space

Davinci Space is in a super early phase. We are so early that I can still greet new users as they appear, hi @Michal, welcome :)

Davinci Space is a bootstrapped project, created for our own needs, paid from our own funds. We are focusing on digital sovereignty, privacy and online safety. We oppose big tech.

Yesterday we deployed the ability to automatically create new communities. I am super happy.

New Feature: Video Upload

Now you can upload videos in the attachment carousel under your post, no need to link in youtube videos. Up to 5 gigabytes, should be enough for a 2-hour lecture in one go.

Video thumbnails are coming soon.

Quest: Books

Another day, another quest. This time I want you to tell me about books :)

I myself is guilty of buying too many books -- I think I have about 30 in the queue... Currently reading the new translation of Odyssey, and very much liking it.

I also picked up an odd habit recently of starting and reading multiple books at the same time. Currently I have started and reading:

A Week Of Quests

Davinci's Quest framework is quite capable. I want to create a series of quests to showcase its capabilities.

To kick things off, Let's start with a street art competition. Take photos in your city or area of things that you really like -- either official art or a grafitti.

But there are important rules:

Not just any piece of art or random tag. Show us something that you really like.
It should be your own photo. Not something you took from the internet or -- god forbid -- LLM generated.

The OG Membership Tier

As a test, I created the OG membership tier. It costs 3 Euros per month, or 23 Euros per year. (Yes that's a big discount).

I will disable this and replace it with a basic tier once we reach 23 paid members.

The OG Tier will keep picking up the advanced permissions -- all library acces, games, special promotions.

For now, it gives you the ability to post.

Thank you for your support.

Development Updates

We are pretty much at feature parity with the old Davinci Space codebase. The major difference is the code quality and the size of the codebase. This time we have a strict development and review process, and a code base that is organized and about 1/10th of the previous one.

This week saw the implementation of:

payment integration (ok, that was last week)
donation box (also for non-members)
quests
leaderboards
several refinements.
